How It Works
Barlow's Formula
Calculates the theoretical burst pressure of cylindrical tubes and hoses:
P_burst = 2 × S × t / OD
- S = Ultimate tensile strength (psi)
- t = Wall thickness (inches)
- OD = Outside diameter (inches)
Working and Proof Pressures
P_working = P_burst / Safety Factor
P_proof = P_burst / 2 (standard proof test ratio)
Material UTS Values
- Carbon Steel (SAE 1020): 60,000 psi
- Stainless Steel (304): 75,000 psi
- Aluminum (6061-T6): 45,000 psi
- Rubber Hose: ~3,000 psi equiv.
Safety Factors
- 4:1 - Standard industrial
- 6:1 - Mobile equipment
- 8:1 - Personnel rated
- 10:1 - Critical safety
