How It Works

Barlow's Formula

Calculates the theoretical burst pressure of cylindrical tubes and hoses:

P_burst = 2 × S × t / OD

  • S = Ultimate tensile strength (psi)
  • t = Wall thickness (inches)
  • OD = Outside diameter (inches)

Working and Proof Pressures

P_working = P_burst / Safety Factor

P_proof = P_burst / 2 (standard proof test ratio)

Material UTS Values

  • Carbon Steel (SAE 1020): 60,000 psi
  • Stainless Steel (304): 75,000 psi
  • Aluminum (6061-T6): 45,000 psi
  • Rubber Hose: ~3,000 psi equiv.

Safety Factors

  • 4:1 - Standard industrial
  • 6:1 - Mobile equipment
  • 8:1 - Personnel rated
  • 10:1 - Critical safety
